With temperatures rising, Public Utilities get overloaded. Sometimes there is an unexpected power outage, but you may also find yourself dealing with rolling blackouts and other issues cas power companies try to relieve stress on overloaded systems.

Whatever issues may come your way, you should be ready to respond with minimum down time. The best way to do that is to know your vulnerabilities and have a business continuity and disaster recovery plan.

If you don’t have a recovery strategy ready to use if you find your business without power, here are 5 things you should consider to prepare for the Summer swelter:

  1. Can you afford to lose power?
What does it cost your company to be down for an hour, 4 hours, a day?
  2. How long can your business remain productive while off the grid?
Which processes can continue to work manually? Which ones need to be connected? What is your RTO for critical processes?
  3. When did you last test your backup generators?
Even mechanical systems can fail. Backup generators should be powered up on a schedule throughout the year to ensure they will run when needed.
  4. Can your employees who work from home remain productive?
Do you know if your remote workers can connect during a power outage? If they are critical workers, you may need to have an alternate worksite ready for their use. Make sure your business impact analysis is up to date so that your team has the latest personnel and process information.
  5. Is there a time of day or the month that would have a greater impact on our business if the lights go out?
Conducting a BIA will help you to know your vulnerabilities and be better prepared to respond.
